The people faced conflict not only within their community - but potentially those outside it. This potential conflict gives a view into the apostles heart and what is at the core of all our conflicts: a conflict of the heart - will our confidence be in our flesh or our Lord.

It has been our temptation from the moment our first parents ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (i.e. - the tree of i'll choose for myself what is good and bad) to seek our own interests above all others. Paul continues in his challenge to do just the opposite - think of others before yourself; the interests of others along side your own. In so much that we do this, we will have the mind of Christ. Here Paul tells them to be obedient - to work out their salvation. We discuss what Paul means by this and how he provides two living examples of what he means.

Due to a technical issue (the batteries died in the mp3 recorder) the beginning of this message was cut. It begins right after an introduction where we asked, what makes a good father?

May 23-25 our church youth group participated in World Vision's 30hr Famine. 13 youth in a town of under 400 were able to raise just under $2000.00 to work against world hunger. To put that in perspective, according to WV, it costs 420 dollars a year for a child in need to eat. 4 children will now not go hungry this year is large part to the participation of these young lives and I am very proud of them ; as I am once again humbled on a global scale the need for compassion action in this world we are called to. This message was in midst of a service recognizing these students as well as educating ourselves again in the Lord to look outside ourselves and like him, not run from the suffering of others, but to willing enter it with a message and lives of hope.

As Paul sat chained to a Roman guard he yearned for the church in Philippi with joy in his heart. Is it possible for the Christian to be lonely? Yes. Is it possible to find joy even in these times of physical or emotional isolation? Yes. Paul suffered loneliness for the sake of the gospel, ostracization; there is a good chance we will too at one point or another. Paul's fellowship with God's people in Philippi speaks of a loving community of Christ followers who lived and sacrificed on behalf of one another in Christ; perhaps we can find ourselves in states of loneliness, not because we are suffering for the gospel, but because we disengaged from the community of faith God has called us too and to sacrifice for. This message speaks to both these realities.

In light of Mother's Day we looked at Jesus' words in John 16:21 - how a woman giving birth experiences pain but that pain gives way to joy for a new life has come into the word. Paul's experience was similar in birthing the church in Philippi - pain in light of joy and how in the heart of Jesus, Paul was just fine with that.

Christ lived a countercultural, irreligious life marked by joy. This morning we asked how joyfully rebellious are we? This message served as a introduction not only to a series on the book of Philippians but as the beginning of a social experiment I encouraged the people to be involved in.

Jesus pointed to children to point us to the Kingdom. What did he mean by this? This message looks at the faith and willingness children possess and how they dare to dream big - and how these characteristics are necessary for anyone who would see the kingdom. (i.e. - look up and see what God would do with us)
